In the first of a series of unfortunate mishaps, the face of Proserpine was rucked during the lining process; that is, the cloth was compressed, resulting in a number of unsightly folds. At first it was set aside and a <xref doc="a.s233.rap">new painting</xref> begun, but, according to <xref doc="a.nd497.r8.m33.rad" from="170">Marillier</xref>, Rossetti soon returned to the work and restored it. However, the painting was misplaced while being transported to Kelmscott (Surtees, <xref doc="a.n6797.r58s9.vol1.rad" workcode="s233" from="131" to="132"> <title level="bk"> <hi rend="i">A Catalogue Raisonné</hi> , 132).
