WMR had completed his translation much earlier, in the late 1850s, and began a translation of the <bibl> <xref doc="a."> <title level="bk"> <hi rend="i">Purgatorio</hi> at that time. He tried to get it published by Macmillan but was initially refused. Macmillan later accepted it and it was issued in 1865.
