Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

DGR executed this drawing around 1857. Until Sotheby's offered it for sale (18 March 1971, item 128), the drawing was not publically known. W. H. Doeg originally owned the painting. He bought the picture from DGR in 1872, when the two exchanged a couple of letters, one of which was attached to the back and sold with the picture. The purchase price was £25. It afterwards came to the Maas Gallery, which sold the picture in June of 1996.
