Scholarly Commentary

This striking picture is one of many that DGR made of Mrs. Morris during the 1870s especially. It is a front-facing bust portrait with Mrs. Morris wearing a light garment that falls away from her right shoulder. The expression is unusually haunting, even for a portrait of Mrs. Morris.
