Introduction

This jewelry design is one of DGR's most striking. The finished piece was used effectively in several of his best paintings, perhaps most memorably in Monna Vanna . This, the earliest known sketch, was found in a group of disbound notebook pages comprising (for the most part) the remains of an integral notebook that DGR used between 1863-1869 for various kinds of memoranda. On the page are three preliminary designs for the brooch.
