Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The drawing was first exposed to public notice in its sale at Duke's in April 2012, where it was offered at auction with two other previously unknown drawings: Lady Having Her Hair Combed Out (1855) and Venus with Two Doves (1870). The three drawings were gifted by WMR in 1905 to Effie Ritchie (nee Stillman) (1871-1911), the daughter of Marie Spartali Stillman (1844-1927), who sat for several of DGR's pictures.
