Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is an instance of the second state of the Second Trial Book in a complete form, except that it is missing the front matter (the four pages of Signature A). DGR must have sent this copy to Mrs. Morris at the end of November 1869, although no accompanying letter appears extant. The proof is completely unmarked.

As Charles Fairfax Murray's note in the Fitzwilliam's copy of the First Trial Book indicates, the signature A leaves were removed from these proofs and (wrongly) placed in that copy of Trial Book 1.
