Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The presence of the fair copy in DGR's gift book of poems for Jane Morris strongly suggests that the poem is associated with his thoughts of her, and indeed that it is addressed to her—perhaps written after they had both left Kelmscott in 1871 after their extended time together in the summer-autumn of that year.

Textual History: Composition

WMR dates this work to 1875, but the fair copy in DGR's gift book to Jane Morris of 1874 shows that it was written earlier.

Printing History

First published in the 1881 Ballads and Sonnets and collected thereafter.
