for possible publication in the periodical (see Fredeman, The P.R.B. Journal22, 35). The
poem was never republished, although
Patmore's biographer Basil Champneys declared it “eminently
characteristic of the poet's thought” (Memoirs
and Correspondence of Coventry Patmore (1900) I. 86).
