There are various inscriptions on the painting. Above the head of the figures, Rossetti wrote: ‘Amator’, ‘Amata’. And above the head of Love is written: ‘Amor’. Ribbons are inscribed above and below the painting. The upper ribbon reads: ‘Madonna, Dio vi fece, Dio vi guardi, Madonna Dio v'onori’. The lower ribbon reads: ‘Dio v'innalzi, Madonna, Dio vi dia le voglie vostre’.
