Note: Surtees attests that Lady Amy Coats has inscribed a label on the back of the painting (a copy of the original label) that reads: “Original drawing by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Study for Frontispiece to Early Italian Poets or Dante and his Circle [ sic]. Given by him to Aldernon Charles Swinburne. Given to me by Alice and Isabel Swinburne in memory of Charlotte Jane Swinburne OBIT 1899 W. S.”
