His comment on the task to Walter Deverell, in a letter of 18 December 1846, is revealing: “As for the ‘Lied’. . .let me tell you that 40 Cantos (very many of them more than 800 ballad lines long) is no joke” (see Fredeman, Correspondence I. 42). None of the work seems to have survived.
