Scholarly Commentary
Introduction
This set of corrected page proofs represents the core of the copy text for the publication of the 1881 Poems. A New Edition . DGR gave this set of marked up proof pages to F. S. Ellis in early May 1880 for printing by Strangeways. Strangeways must have received it sometime between 4 and 13 May (see Fredeman, Correspondence, 81.207, 222).
These proofs and their corrections should be compared with the copy of the Tauchnitz edition at Yale. This has a similar but not identical set of autograph corrections. They antedate the corrections in these proof pages. Some date from 1879 and others may well have been made even much earlier.
