DGR opened his long letter from Paris to his brother (18 October 1849) with
this very polemical sonnet declaming against art works in the Louvre that,
in his view, failed miserably to exhibit the spiritual and artistic
standards of the PRB.
The sonnet was probably written on 18 October. The other poems included in
the letter would have been composed sometime during the week before.

Family Letters (II. 71-72), collected in 1911.
