Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The dialogue is one of the earliest surviving examples of popular poetry devised in the Sicilian Court school of Frederick II in the mid-thirteenth-century. DGR's source text in Poeti del primo secolo (I. 1-15) alters the original metrical structure of the poem.

See DGR's translation for further commentary.

Textual History: Composition

Internal evidence shows the poem was written between 1231-1250.
