Editorial glosses and textual notes are available in a pop-up window. Line numbering reflects the structure of the The first edition of the 1881 Poems. A New Edition.
DGR translated this from Leopardi's
ed. Carlo Muscetta and Giuseppe Savoca (1968) p. 167). Leopardi's is a free translation of
“La feuille” by Antoine-Vincent Arnault (1766-1834).
DGR copied out for Jane Morris both the French text and his translation. He clearly “read” these texts in reference to himself, to his love for Mrs. Morris, and to his own work as a poet.
The translation was apparently made in 1869.
First published in the first edition of the 1881 Poems. A New Edition and collected thereafter.
