Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

DGR translated this from Leopardi's “Imitazione” (see the Canti, ed. Carlo Muscetta and Giuseppe Savoca (1968) p. 167). Leopardi's is a free translation of “La feuille” by Antoine-Vincent Arnault (1766-1834).

DGR copied out for Jane Morris both the French text and his translation. He clearly “read” these texts in reference to himself, to his love for Mrs. Morris, and to his own work as a poet.

Textual History: Composition

The translation was apparently made in 1869.

Printing History

First published in the first edition of the 1881 Poems. A New Edition and collected thereafter.
