Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

Edmund Bates was a picture dealer who corresponded with DGR in July 1879 about two pictures he had and that he believed were portraits of Blake and his wife. Bates has been thought to be from Leeds, but as this poem suggests, he seems to have lived in Farnham.

Printing History

The manuscript poem has never been printed.
