Note: The picture is endorsed on the reverse by WMR who writes, “My aunt Eliza Polidori gave me this as being done by Gabriel—It hardly looks to me like his style in Boyhood—It is a skit upon a schoolfellow of ours, a son of Truefitt, the hairdresser. Date say 1841. WMR 25/10/85.”

Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

While Helen Rossetti Angeli agrees with WMR that the picture is by DGR, Fredeman suggests a slightly earlier date based upon stylistic evidence.
