Introduction

DGR's text in his satirical cartoon reads: “As you are not of my parish,” said a gentleman to a begging sailor. “I cannot think of relieving you.” “Sir,” replied the tar with an air of heroism, “I lost my leg fighting for all parishes.”. WMR commented that the anecdote came from a book of naval stories that Maria was fond of (see WMR, Family Letters Vol. 2 87 ).
