Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

This is the design that DGR made for a stained glass window to be manufactured by “The Firm”, that is to say, the partnership of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. founded in April 1861. The original drawing, while extant, is in private hands. Three different stained glass windows were made from it: the original window at All Saints, Langton Green, Kent, and the variations made later for St. Mary's at Dedworth and St. Olave's at Gatcombe. Sewter, usually a severe critic of DGR's designs, praises the “moving intensity of feeling” in this one.

Production History

The design was made in 1862.
