Scholarly Commentary

This is perhaps the most striking of the series of drawings that DGR executed in 1846-1848 for Poe's poem.

The Raven: Angel Footfalls
Description: “Man seated cross-legged in an armchair beside a table on which are placed a lamp and an open book. He is gazing intently at a group of female spirits which pass before him. A raven is perched on a marble bust upper left,” (Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné , vol. 1, 4). Sketched in the background is a bookcase and a picture hanging on the wall beside it.
