This work emerged when DGR cut down a picture he was working on, one of his many attempts at
rendering Mrs. Morris as Proserpine. See the group of
paintings and drawings relating to that subject.
Mrs. Morris holds a bunch of snowdrops, and in her hair are yellow primroses. These are
spring flowers and suggest that the picture represents Proserpine before she was carried off
