Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The drawing illustrates the ballad by Elizabeth Barrett, “The Romaunt of Margret” . The two female figures represent Margret and her shadow, with whom she converses in the ballad. Surtees believes the picture to be related to another drawing from the same period, Two Female Figures (see Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. 1, 5).

A slightly later drawing takes its title from the same ballad.
