Introduction

The drawing depicts a man and woman conversing: “Man on left, back view, has both hands raised, a girdle in his right hand; head in profile to right. The woman is facing him, bending forward, hands clasped at waist” (Surtees, A Catalogue Raisonné , vol. 1, 6 (no. 27)).
