Introduction

This caricature was sent in a letter to Jane Morris, with the following explanation: “As it is now the fashion for successful men in any walk of literature to start a newspaper at once, I offer overpage a heading on the principle of the “Globe and Traveller.” Will you endeavour to make the great original “seriously incline” thereto?” (Fredeman, Correspondence, 68.100).
