Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

Although titled as the 1857 watercolour, this picture is radically different not only in point of its iconography. It also exhibits the more sensuous style of DGR's later work.

Production History

DGR executed this picture quickly in the early winter of 1874, as he told Thomas Gordon Hake (see Fredeman, Correspondence74. 262).
