Introduction

DGR sent this drawing as part of his letter of 1 January 1853 to Thomas Woolner. A number of other drawings were enclosed with the letter but only one other, “William Sleeping”, is known, and that—like the present drawing—only in reproduction. See Fredeman, Correspondence, I. 220-226 (53.1).
