Introduction
The implication of DGR's note to the poem is that he has not identified the Ugolino of the sonnet; but then neither has any subsequent scholar. The original sonnet is of course a highly ironical satire.
For commentary on Rustico see editorial notes on DGR's translation of Rustico's sonnet on Albizzo de' Caponsacchi. The translation is quite close. DGR's source text is Trucchi's Poesie Italiane inedite (I. 230).

The sonnet is probably an early work, from the late 40s or early 50s.
Printing History
The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
