We know little about this poem, which WMR—our sole source of information—dates to 1851. WMR's note to the poem tries to give it a biographical
location: “Written in 1851. I do not know to whom
the verses were addressed: not I think Miss Siddal, who had small or
no skill in music”.
The only manuscript is an undated holograph fair copy at Princeton.
