Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

The sonnet seems a post-exilic work of Dante's, probably written ca. 1303-1306. Cino's response sonnet is the more interesting work of the two.

See also DGR's note to the sonnet, which suggests an early date for the poem. The source text for DGR's translation was Fraticelli's Opere Minori di Dante Alighieri (I. 145).

Textual History: Composition

Probably an early translation, late 1840s.

Printing History

The translation was first published in 1861 in The Early Italian Poets; it was reprinted in 1874 in Dante and his Circle.
