Introduction

Information on DGR's painting techniques is not easy to find. The most important survive in a pair of related painting instructions DGR left for a studio assistant, probably in 1867 for Treffry Dunn. One of these gives a drawing of the layout of the palette itself, the other is a set of prose notes. A set of instructions on body proportions also survives (DGR first jotted these instructions down in one of his small notebooks.
