Introduction

The entire letter is first published in Fredeman, Correspondence (71.153). The poem is copied at the end, and introduced by the remark: “I have some sonnets lying under my eye and will copy one instead of tearing off the last leaf of this note.” This sonnet, “From Dawn to Noon”, must have been composed not much earlier than the letter.
