Scholarly Commentary

Introduction

DGR's lithographic work was minimal. Only three works are known: this work, illustrating a scene from Frédéric Soulié's (1800-1847) novel Les Mémoires du Diable (1837-1838); the lithographs for his set of Playing Cards; and two lithographs made for the family, portraits of Gaetano Polidori and Francesco Polidori.

Production History

The original drawing for this lithograph has not been traced. Several lithographic copies were pulled. The three known are held now at the Victoria and Albert Museum, at Wightwick Manor, and in the collection of the late William E. Fredeman. The latter is reproduced in Fredeman's A Rossetti Cabinet, plate 85.
